(Kaieteur News) – The Amaila Falls Hydropower Project could require updated environmental and feasibility studies before financing is secured, United States Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot has indicated, raising fresh questions about the government’s push to advance the long-delayed project.
The government has frequently faced criticism over its handling of environmental and feasibility assessments for major infrastructure projects. The potential need to revisit studies for Amaila Falls could add another layer of scrutiny to the proposed hydropower facility, which has been the subject of debate over its design, environmental implications and ability to deliver reliable electricity.
Last month, the Department of Public Information (DPI) reported that the United States Export-Import Bank (US EXIM) was willing to provide financing for the project.
