(Kaieteur News) – Thirty recruits of the Guyana Fire Service on Tuesday underwent specialised training to recognise the signs of human trafficking, identify potential victims and respond appropriately to suspected cases.
According to a press release from the fire service, the training aims to strengthen frontline awareness and improve efforts to protect potential victims. Organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the secretariat of the Ministerial Task Force on Trafficking in Persons, the session was held on Tuesday at the Guyana Fire Service Training School in Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
The programme covered the different forms of exploitation, indicators of trafficking and the vulnerabilities of adult and child victims. It also examines the importance of a human rights-based approach when dealing with suspected victims. Inspector Marilyn Rodney, Head of the Guyana Police Force’s Trafficking in Persons Unit, is among the presenters’ guiding participants on identifying potential victims and understanding the circumstances that may indicate exploitation.
