(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has stepped up its fight against electricity theft, conducting an enforcement exercise in a section of Sophia on Thursday to identify and remove illegal connections from the national power network.
GPL warned that electricity theft is a criminal offence and said anyone found illegally tapping into the network will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The company said illegal connections pose a serious threat to lives and property, increasing the risk of electrocution, fires, serious injuries and death.
They can also damage GPL’s infrastructure and undermine the quality and reliability of electricity supplied to legitimate customers. GPL is urging residents to report suspected electricity theft through its hotline at 226-2600, toll-free at 0475, or via WhatsApp at 699-4882. Electricity theft is dangerous. Don’t risk your life—or the lives of others. Report it.
