Chief Justice Bryan Sykes says artificial intelligence (AI) should not be viewed as a replacement for court officials but rather as a tool to enhance efficiency and productivity within the justice system.

“Artificial intelligence is not about replacing the people who make the justice system work. It’s not about replacing judges or registrars or any staff member. AI must work with people, not in place of people. It is integrating people and the technology,” Justice Sykes said.

“Its proper role and function is to help us to manage information more effectively, reduce repetitive and unnecessary administrative burdens, identify patterns that may require attention, improve access to accurate information, support better preparation, and enable judges and staff to devote more of their time and skill to the work that requires human discernment.”
