The political balance in the Clarendon Municipal Corporation has been dramatically tipped in favour of the People’s National Party (PNP) after Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Councillor Tanyalee Williams crossed the floor yesterday, handing the Opposition a clear majority.
Williams, who represents the May Pen North division, made the move during Thursday’s sitting of the corporation, ending an 11-11 deadlock and giving the PNP 12 seats to the JLP’s 10.
Her defection comes amid an already heated struggle over leadership and control of the municipal body and puts the PNP in a stronger position to influence its decision-making and governance.
