(Kaieteur News) – Former Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Paul Slowe, has warned that the misuse of police authority to obtain citizens’ private telecommunications information represents a serious abuse of public trust and could amount to criminal misconduct in public office.
Slowe was weighing in on the corruption and abuse of office allegations involving Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Fazil Karimbaksh, in an invited comment to Kaieteur News. The allegations centre, in part, on the purported use of State security machinery to obtain personal telephone records under the guise of an official investigation.
“I’m not sure how authentic that is, that is an allegation,” Slowe stated, but I would say that any person in such an office, if they were to use the office to get the telephone records of someone with whom they might have a relationship outside of any legitimate investigation, that is unethical, that is improper. It might even be criminal. Because it might come into the realm of what they call misconduct in public office.”
