The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) has called for the immediate release of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, warning that his remand to prison raises serious concerns about democracy, judicial independence and the protection of fundamental rights in Guyana.
In a statement issued on October 31, 2026, IFAAD Vice Chairman Pt. Ubraj Narine said the circumstances surrounding Mohamed’s incarceration raise questions about the country’s democratic institutions and the potential for political influence in the administration of justice.
The organisation expressed concern that government actions perceived as targeting or undermining political opponents could push Guyana towards autocratic governance.
