ComÂmisÂsionÂer of PoÂlice AlÂlisÂter GueÂvarÂro reafÂfirmed his zeÂro-tolÂerÂance apÂproach to ilÂleÂgal quarÂryÂing and minÂerÂal proÂcessÂing, sayÂing the Trinidad and ToÂbaÂgo PoÂlice SerÂvice has been purÂsuÂing ofÂfendÂers for years and will conÂtinÂue to disÂmanÂtle the crimÂiÂnal netÂworks beÂhind the trade.
He said the isÂsue did not sudÂdenÂly come unÂder inÂvesÂtiÂgaÂtion, as ofÂfiÂcers have conÂsisÂtentÂly tarÂgetÂed opÂerÂaÂtions that rob the counÂtry of its reÂsources, unÂderÂmine leÂgitÂiÂmate inÂdusÂtry, and help fiÂnance orÂganÂised crimÂiÂnal gangs.
AcÂcordÂing to the ComÂmisÂsionÂer, forty-sevÂen peoÂple were arÂrestÂed and charged beÂtween 2020 and 2025 for ofÂfences reÂlatÂed to ilÂleÂgal quarÂryÂing and minÂerÂal proÂcessÂing withÂout the reÂquired liÂcence from the DiÂrecÂtor of MinÂerÂals or the State Land ComÂmisÂsionÂer. NineÂteen were charged for minÂing withÂout a liÂcence and twenÂty-eight for proÂcessÂing withÂout a liÂcence.
