White smoke is pourÂing out of the SisÂtine Chapel chimÂney, sigÂnalling that a pope has been electÂed to lead the Catholic Church.
That means the winÂner seÂcured at least 89 votes of the 133 carÂdiÂnals parÂticÂiÂpatÂing in the conÂclave to elect a sucÂcesÂsor to Pope FranÂcis. The crowd in St. PeÂter’s Square eruptÂed in cheers. The name will be anÂnounced latÂer, when a top carÂdiÂnal utÂters the words “HabeÂmus paÂpam!” Latin for “We have a pope!” from the logÂgia of St. PeÂter’s BasilÂiÂca. The carÂdiÂnal then reads the winÂner’s birth name in Latin, and reÂveals the name he has choÂsen to be called.
The new pope is then exÂpectÂed to make his first pubÂlic apÂpearÂance and imÂpart a blessÂing from the same logÂgia.
