Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling for tighter security at Carnival events and in surrounding areas, urging authorities to protect citizens and visitors from crime.
She warned that this year’s celebrations are happening under a State of Emergency due to "the unprecedented, uncontrollable crime and violence wave that has besieged our nation for years." She urged police to "diligently maintain a strong presence at all major Carnival events" to ensure the safety of fete-goers, spectators, and revellers.
Persad-Bissessar also wants increased police patrols in rural towns, boroughs, and regional corporations hosting J’ouvert and other festivities. She called for security reinforcements in residential areas, public beaches, and rivers, warning that these locations remain vulnerable.
