The USS GerÂald R. Ford, the world largest airÂcraft carÂriÂer, reÂturned home to VirÂginia on SatÂurÂday afÂter an 11-month deÂployÂment, the longest since the VietÂnam War, that saw it supÂport the U.S. war with Iran and the capÂture of Nicolás Maduro when he was Venezuela’s presÂiÂdent.
The most adÂvanced U.S. warÂship and two acÂcomÂpaÂnyÂing deÂstroyÂers docked at Naval StaÂtion NorÂfolk with about 5,000 sailors waitÂing to see their famÂiÂlies for the first time since June. BeÂsides comÂbat opÂerÂaÂtions and traÂversÂing conÂtiÂnents, the sailors aboard the carÂriÂer faced a nonÂcomÂbat-reÂlatÂed fire that left hunÂdreds withÂout places to sleep and forced lengthy reÂpairs on the Greek isÂland of Crete.
DeÂfense SecÂreÂtary PeÂte Hegseth was on hand for the arÂrival of the warÂships, which inÂcludÂed the deÂstroyÂer USS BainÂbridge.
