(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodar Indar has called on Caribbean countries to work together to stamp out dark fleet operations, warning that ships operating under national flags are being used for illicit activities, including the transportation of weapons and sanctioned oil.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Caribbean Shipping Association conference in Georgetown on Monday, Minister Indar described dark fleet operations as a “black stain on maritime authorities.”
Indar stressed that the misuse of national flags could damage the reputation of countries and their maritime administrations. “Those are not, you know, things that any nation would like to have their name or their flag or their flag state be associated with,” the minister said.
