THE United National Congress says it is alarmed by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) disclosure that it has received no confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office or any other State authority regarding the presence of international election observers.
Prime Minister Stuart Young announced two weeks ago that the Government had invited Commonwealth observers and observers from the Carter Centre, along with Caricom observers for the April 28 election. But the EBC has received no word from the Commonwealth or Carter Centre about observers coming to T&T for the elections.
The UNC in a media release yesterday said it is asking where are the international observers. The party said it will pursue this matter urgently, including direct engagement with international bodies and diplomatic missions if necessary since Trinidad and Tobago must not hold an election without independent international scrutiny.
