Chinese Landing Residents Stand Firm Against Mining Encroachment

Residents of Chinese Landing are standing their ground against efforts to move heavy mining equipment onto disputed areas of their titled lands, with Toshao Nikita Miller leading the community’s resistance in a confrontation that has placed Indigenous land rights against Guyana’s powerful gold-mining interests.

The standoff at Tassawini has continued as villagers maintain a presence at the access point to prevent mining equipment associated with miner Wayne Vieira from entering the area.

The Village Council says at least nine excavators, two bulldozers and several dredge engines were brought into the area without its prior knowledge or permission. Residents subsequently blocked additional machinery from proceeding.
