(Kaieteur News) â International award-winning lawyer, Melinda Janki has penned an extensive letter to President Irfaan Ali outlining the countryâs obligations under international law and urging the Government of Guyana (GoG) to terminate all business with Israel over the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).
The letter dated September 9, and addressed to the President highlights that the goal of international law is peace among peoples, a goal cannot be realised as long as Israel continues to treat the international rule of law with contempt and continues with its egregious violations of the legal rights of the Palestinian people.
Janki said that Israelâs contempt for the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of the people of Palestine is incompatible with freedom, justice and peace. She therefore asked the GoG to condemn in the strongest possible terms Israelâs genocide in Gaza; Israelâs bombing of hospitals and schools in Gaza; Israelâs murder and maiming of Gazaâs children; Israelâs unlawful and inhumane use of âcollective punishmentâ against babies, children, and unarmed and defenceless women and men in Gaza; and Israelâs gender-based violence against Palestinian women and girls in the form of excessive use of force and abuse, including physical, psychological and verbal abuse and sexual harassment.
