(Kaieteur News) – Guyana’s Ambassador to the United Nations Carolyn Rodrigues- Birkett believes that multilateralism is the path to ending global conflict.
Speaking to the Stimson Center dialogue under the theme “A vision for the future of multilateralism”, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana—a candidate for UN Secretary-General said, “We need a UN then that is fit for purpose and that is effective. And I think all of us would agree that the UN has delivered substantially over these 81 years, from the global rules that we agree to live by, to being the only lifeline for many people still today.”
“Many countries, including mine, came about because of the UN decolonisation process. The UN held our hands all the way to where we are today. So, it is not a question of whether we need the UN. It’s a question of what type of UN we need not only for today, but also for the future.”
