Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be in Tobago on Tuesday for the grand opening of the new airport terminal. The opening is scheduled for 1 pm and will be attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Secretary Farley Augustine. The airport’s opening has been described as a gamechanger for Tobago’s tourism sector, and comes less than two weeks before the inaugural weekly Toronto-to-Tobago flight.
Augustine has repeatedly said the airport will not be the panacea to the tourism’s sector, noting an improvement in the quality and quantity of the island’s room stock is necessary.
Support on that front is close with the sod-turning ceremony for the $500 million Marriott resort at Rocky Point also scheduled for Tuesday. Persad-Bissessar and Augustine are expected to attend this ceremony as well. The Superior Hotels development will feature a 200-room hotel, villas, townhouses and recreational amenities.
