(Kaieteur News) – A barge carrying approximately 8,000 barrels of waste oil has been stabilised after listing significantly at a private wharf on the East Bank of Demerara, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said on Wednesday.
In an update, the CDC said the vessel was now upright and stable, with its cargo intact, following the implementation of corrective measures to prevent further movement and minimise the risk of environmental damage. The incident had prompted a coordinated response involving several government agencies after the vessel was observed listing significantly while berthed at the facility, raising concerns about a potential oil spill.
The CDC said containment booms had been deployed around the affected vessel as a precautionary measure to restrict the movement of any oil. Response personnel and resources have also been mobilised to support containment, recovery and environmental protection efforts.
