THE murder of a Sangre Grande businessman reportedly linked to millions in political donations to a Member of Parliament has reignited urgent calls for campaign finance reform in Trinidad and Tobago.
In a release on Monday, the Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute (TTTI) expressed 'deep concern and sadness at the tragic killing of businessman Danny Guerra on March 13,' extending condolences to his family, friends and the wider community, where he was known for his entrepreneurial success and contributions.
The organisation said the killing had shocked the nation not only because of the violence involved, but also due to the broader implications surrounding money and politics. It pointed to media reports which alleged that the businessman had made substantial political contributions, with figures ranging between $5 million and $20 million.
