By Mark DaCosta- The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has delivered a forceful indictment of what it describes as a pattern of concealment, scapegoating and intimidation under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration, sharply criticising the Government’s handling of the MV Barima disaster and demanding transparency, accountability and protection for citizens seeking answers.

The coalition’s position was outlined at a press conference on August 14, 2026, in a statement read by APNU parliamentarian Nina Flue-Bess, who said the Government must account for its response to the tragedy, release critical records concerning the vessel’s inspection, maintenance, seaworthiness, loading and emergency response, and ensure that accountability extends beyond individual crew members to officials and institutions responsible for oversight.

The MV Barima incident serves as a chilling reminder of the systemic failures that can occur when government priority is placed on managing narratives rather than safeguarding lives. The state-operated vessel, with a history spanning 87 years, sank on July 18, leading to an outcry from citizens mourning the loss while seeking answers. APNU has rightly highlighted that the government’s conduct has raised more questions than it has answered, revealing a troubling pattern reminiscent of past tragedies, such as the Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire in 2023. Deputy Prime Minister has been accused of misleading statements in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, suggesting the administration prioritised image management above searching for the truth.
