(Kaieteur News) – The passing of Eusi Kwayana at 101 marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Guyana’s political, educational and intellectual history. His life spanned colonial rule, the struggle for self-government, independence and the turbulent decades that shaped the modern Guyanese state. Few individuals have witnessed so much of the country’s evolution while contributing so significantly to the debates that defined it.
Born Sydney Evanson King on 4thApril, 1925, Kwayana became involved in community affairs in Buxton from an early age. His political journey began in the 1940s and eventually took him into the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), where he participated in the movement for self-government. Following the PPP’s victory in the 1953 elections, he served in the short-lived government as Minister of Communication and Works. The British suspension of the Constitution and removal of that administration from office marked an early and consequential episode in his political life.
