Parent education programme targets family rifts, inherited trauma

A breakdown in relationships between caregivers, gaps in understanding of child development and inherited generational trauma are among the leading pressures on Barbadian households, according to research carried out through the Parent Education Programme.

The research-backed project, launched in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), surveyed parents, teachers, psychologists, social workers, senior education officers and students to identify the root causes of family dysfunction.

The data revealed that relationship breakdowns between caregivers represent the single largest burden on home environments, with adult animosity directly spilling over into child-rearing.
