In a blistering Facebook video statement released Saturday, Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Dr. Terrence Campbell has launched a scathing attack on Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony and the Finance Ministry, accusing them of fostering a “serious, very serious crisis” within Guyana’s healthcare system.Speaking directly to the nation, Campbell framed the situation as a moral failing in a nation boasting the world’s fastest-growing economy. “Imagine, you study, you pass your exam, you work in, and seven and nine months you can’t get paid,” Campbell railed, detailing the plight of local nurses who are allegedly waiting up to nine months for their salaries after graduating.

The MP’s accusations did not stop at local staff. He claimed the government’s decision to terminate the medical assistance programme with Cuba and directly employ Cuban doctors has backfired catastrophically. According to Campbell, these doctors are waiting five to nine months for pay—leaving them unable to support families back in Cuba during a severe economic crisis there. Adding insult to injury, he alleged the government is now charging these unpaid doctors for accommodation they previously received for free. “No pay, no accommodation. How you supposed to take care of the patients here?” he questioned.

Campbell painted a grim picture of the country’s medical infrastructure, alleging that nurses at the Palms Geriatric Institution are forced to dip into their own pockets to buy essential supplies for patients because “the toilet’s not working.” He cited a recent case where a young child was given Cloxacillin that had expired since December 2025, and noted that patients at the Diamond Hospital are turned away after 3:00 p.m. because no doctors are available.
