Trinidad and ToÂbaÂgo feaÂtured twice on the GramÂmy stage last night, with loÂcal talÂent recogÂnised across muÂsic video and clasÂsiÂcal catÂeÂgories.
TrinÂbagÂonÂian proÂducÂer JoÂlene Mendes was part of the proÂducÂtion team beÂhind hip hop star Doechii’s hit song AnxÂiÂety, which won the GramÂmy Award for best muÂsic video. The project beat out enÂtries from SabÂriÂna CarÂpenÂter, Sade, OK Go, and Clipse. AlÂthough Doechii is not TrinÂbagÂonÂian, Mendes is. With both Doechii and diÂrecÂtor James MackÂel unÂavailÂable to acÂcept the award, Mendes stepped forÂward to reÂceive the GramÂmy and deÂlivÂer the acÂcepÂtance reÂmarks.
AlÂso repÂreÂsentÂing the red, white and black was TrinidaÂdiÂan-CanaÂdiÂan conÂducÂtor Kwame Ryan. Ryan, a 2017 ANSA LauÂreÂate and forÂmer diÂrecÂtor of the UTT AcadÂeÂmy for the PerÂformÂing Arts, won the GramÂmy Award for best opera recordÂing for the HousÂton Grand Opera proÂducÂtion of comÂposÂer Jake HegÂgie’s InÂtelÂliÂgence.
