While many have praised the deÂciÂsion to reÂmove the ChristoÂpher ColumÂbus monÂuÂment from Port of Spain, quesÂtions reÂmain about how it will be disÂplayed at the NaÂtionÂal MuÂseÂum and Art Gallery.
Caribbean FreeÂdom Project diÂrecÂtor ShabaÂka KamÂbon welÂcomed the move, sayÂing acÂtivists had long called for its reÂmoval as a necÂesÂsary step away from gloÂriÂfyÂing coloÂnialÂism. He said withÂout reÂloÂcaÂtion, the statÂue might have been deÂstroyed by the pubÂlic.
In reÂcent years, the statÂue has been deÂfacedâsplashed with red paint, its hands reÂmoved, and at one point, a bag placed over its head. But KamÂbon beÂlieves the damÂage should be preÂserved.
