Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has launched a scathing attack on the People’s National Movement (PNM) over its promise to repeal key pieces of legislation if it returns to office, accusing the Opposition of putting young people and communities at risk by opposing the Government’s crime-fighting measures.
Speaking with Guardian Media yesterday, Persad-Bissessar responded to PNM Deputy Leader Sanjiv Boodhu, who announced at the party’s general council meeting at Balisier House on Thursday that the party would seek to repeal the Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Special Operations Bill and the Miscellaneous Provisions (Alcohol, Cannabis, Dangerous Drugs, Gambling and Tobacco) Bill 2026 if elected to office.
Persad-Bissessar mocked the PNM’s position on legislation dealing with special police operations, alcohol, cannabis, dangerous drugs, gambling and tobacco, while insisting the Opposition was free to challenge the laws in court.
