Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday said a “small minority” of “wicked” law enforcement officers are terrorising motorists with fines for road traffic offences.
As a result, she said her Government will go to Parliament to provide a reprieve and propose reforms that would make it mandatory for drivers to be given time to repair vehicle defects before fines are enforced under a “Fixed Penalty Notice Warning System”.
In a post on X yesterday, the Prime Minister said Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Eli Zakour and Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander informed her that a “small minority” of traffic wardens, licensing officers, and police officers have been abusing the ticketing system and terrorising law-abiding citizens, creating an urgent need for Government intervention to stop what she described as “wicked behaviour” and to protect the public.
