Finance Minister Dave Tancoo may have created a legitimate expectation in law when he said people who paid property tax would be getting a refund, former attorney general Faris Al-Rawi said on Friday.
“Look at the situation with Minister Tancoo providing a legitimate expectation you could argue [when he said] ‘No property tax. You will get your return’. And then the Prime Minister, when asked when people were getting their returns, her answer was ‘talk to Tancoo. That (the refund) ain’t happening’.
“That is madness in terms of expectation that may be legitimate or not in law, Al-Rawi said at a news conference at Balisier House, Port of Spain, following a special meeting of the PNM General Council.
