A 37-YEAR-OLD dentist, suspected of receiving a ransom payment in connection with the kidnapping of Jankie Satie Karim, is seeking his release from police custody via a habeas corpus application filed in the High Court on Monday.
Justice Carol Gobin has given officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit until 4 p.m. tomorrow to either formally charge the suspect or release him.
The dentist, whose name cannot be released unless he is charged, was arrested on Thursday evening. His attorneys, Shiva Boodoo and Roshi Balkaran, filed the habeas corpus application arguing that their client has been unlawfully detained in excess of the legal 72-hour limit without any charges being laid.
