The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) says it could face an annual $35 million penalty from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) for ongoing effluent discharge violations at the Beetham Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The potential fine stems from WASA’s non-compliance with the Water Pollution Rules (2019), which regulate the discharge of pollutants into the environment.
The disclosure was made on Friday during a facility tour of the Beetham plant by WASA’s newly formed Executive Evolution Team, led by acting chief executive Jeevan Joseph.
