GRA appeals nearly $800M tax ruling over Mohameds' luxury vehicles

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has appealed a High Court ruling that quashed nearly $800 million in taxes imposed on Hana Mohamed and Bibi Mohamed and blocked the attempted seizure of their luxury vehicles.

The tax authority is asking the Court of Appeal to overturn Justice Gino Persaud’s July 2026 decision, which found that aspects of the GRA’s enforcement actions and long-standing conditions attached to remigrant concessions were unreasonable, unlawful and unsupported by statute.

The court declared that the GRA has no legal authority to mandate that a concession vehicle must be used “solely by the applicant as her primary mode of transportation” and that the owner must report in person to the GRA every six months with the vehicle and its documentation for inspection. The GRA was represented by a legal team including Robin Stoby S.C., Anand Ramlogan S.C., and Sanjeev Datadin, among others.
