Former Police Commissioner Gary Griffith yesterday questioned why body cameras, already purchased during his tenure, are not being used by officers, a measure he said could prevent excessive force and protect officers from unwarranted allegations.
He said that during his time as Commissioner, after a similar shooting, all 17 officers involved were immediately suspended, and questioned why current Commissioner Allister Guevarro is not enforcing similar accountability, especially as these officers might return to patrols armed.
Griffith expressed concern over the declining public trust in the police, noting it had fallen from 59 percent during his tenure to 8 percent today. He argued that body cameras would help restore confidence, particularly amid the implementation of Zones of Special Operations, set to replace the State of Emergency on January 31.
