LIAT flight returns to CJIA after engine issue, 47 passengers safe

A LIAT flight bound for Antigua returned to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Sunday after the pilot reported an engine-related issue, with all 47 passengers disembarking safely. LIAT Flight 5L770 departed CJIA at 11:55h on Sunday for VC Bird International Airport in Antigua, however at about 12:25h, the pilot informed the Control Tower that the aircraft would return to CJIA due to an engine-related issue. After identifying the emergency, the pilot-in-command promptly informed the Air Traffic Control Tower at Timehri. Air traffic controllers provided immediate clearance for the aircraft to return and coordinated its landing, ensuring proper separation from other air traffic. The Aerodrome Fire Service and CJIA authorities were also promptly notified and placed on standby in preparation for the aircraft’s return. The aircraft subsequently landed safely at CJIA, and all 47 passengers disembarked without incident. The aircraft remains at the airport while LIAT’s technical team assesses the issue and works to resolve it. The Area Control Centre at the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) Air Navigation Services has since been commended for its response in coordinating the aircraft’s safe return following the in-flight emergency. The GCAA has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism in air traffic management.
