THE State has been ordered to pay almost $1.9 million in damages to six prisoners who were on remand at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP), where the High Court found they were subjected to cruel and unusual treatment.
Justice Devindra Rampersad, in a judgment delivered last Wednesday, found that the conditions endured by the prisoners between July 2021 and their respective dates of relocation breached their constitutional rights.
The prisoners had been transferred to Building 13 by a decision of the Commissioner of Prisons on July 24, 2021.
