(Kaieteur News) – The Government is moving to strengthen its coastal protection and agricultural monitoring capabilities, with mangrove conservation data set to be integrated into a new Situation Room at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced the initiative on Wednesday while delivering the feature address at the launch of the improved Guyana Mangrove Information System (GuyMIS), highlighting the importance of mangroves in protecting the country’s coastline, agricultural lands and communities from erosion, flooding and climate change.
According to a Ministry of Agriculture press release, developed with support from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the improved GuyMIS platform brings together critical information on mangrove ecosystems, providing researchers, technical officers, policymakers and other stakeholders with a centralised resource to monitor coastal changes, assess restoration activities and make informed decisions on mangrove management and conservation.
