On Au­gust 5, 1962, South African an­ti-apartheid ac­tivist Nel­son Man­dela was ar­rest­ed on charges of leav­ing the coun­try with­out a pass­port and in­cit­ing work­ers to strike; it was the be­gin­ning of 27 years of im­pris­on­ment.
