(Kaieteur News) – Continuing from last week, many men in Guyana may spend years misunderstood and labelled as lazy, irresponsible, forgetful, careless, undisciplined, or emotionally immature. They show chronic forgetfulness, misplacing items, overlooking details, difficulty maintaining organisation, and challenges completing multi-step tasks. Additional indicators are persistent restlessness, difficulty remaining seated during extended meetings or meals, and a continual need for mental or physical stimulation. Other behaviours include interrupting conversations, impulsive decision-making, impatience in queues, and rapid mood fluctuations that are difficult to regulate. It is important to note that ADHD is not a character flaw, intellectual disability, or a result of inadequate parenting.
ADHD can significantly affect academic performance among Guyanese males, from secondary school through university and postgraduate education. Challenges with sustained attention, working memory, executive functioning, organisation, and time management frequently impede learning and academic achievement.
