ASJA Girls’ College San Fernando and St Joseph’s Convent St Joseph continued their sparkling form in the 2026 Secondary Schools Volleyball League (SSVL) season, when both their under-17 and open teams spiked to wins on January 25 and 26, respectively.
At the Pleasantville Indoor Sporting Arena on January 26, ASJA turned back girls’ open holders Maple Leaf International School and also got by San Fernando Central. Against Maple, ASJA cruised in the first set which they took 25-6, before grabbing the second set 25-18 to win the match. ASJA were pushed a bit harder against San Fernando Central, but still came away with a straight-sets result (25-17, 25-16).
St Joseph’s Convent also got past Maple when they edged a three-set thriller. Maple won the first set 25-23, but St Joseph’s Convent charged back to take the next two sets 25-22, 15-11 for the stunning comeback result. The Convent girls had things a bit easier against St George’s College as they got a straight-sets win (25-1, 25-17) in that match after a rampant first set. St George’s did get some points on the board when they won by default against San Fernando Central.
San Fernando Central were present for their clash with Maple and they pushed the latter all the way before going down 2-1. Maple took the first set 25-23, but San Fernando Central showed their fight to clinch an epic second set 26-24. The third and decisive set went the way of Maple as they won it 15-6 to seal the match.
In a pair of girls’ under-17 games played at Aranguez North Secondary on January 25, St Joseph’s Convent blanked Maple, with ASJA overcoming under-17 holders International School of Port of Spain (ISPS). St Joseph’s Convent defeated Maple 25-22, 25-15, with ASJA getting past a gritty ISPS team to clinch their match 25-20, 30-28.
Meanwhile, in boys’ open play on January 25, Barrackpore West Secondary showed their dominance with victories over ASJA Boys’ College San Fernando and St George’s. The ASJA boys weren’t to be left out, though, as they battled hard against St George’s to get a 29-27, 25-21 win. Barrackpore won last season’s boys’ under-15 title.
