(Kaieteur News) – Ten former heads of state and government from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), including former Guyanese President Donald Ramotar, have urged countries worldwide to support a United Nations resolution calling for an end to the United States’ economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.
In an open letter dated 24th October, 2026, the former leaders called on all nations to vote in favour of the resolution when it comes before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 28th October. The signatories described the U.S. embargo as contrary to international law and accused Washington of disregarding the international community’s position on the matter.
They noted that since 1992, the UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted resolutions calling for an end to the embargo, but the United States has continued to ignore those calls. “We, the undersigned former Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), strongly and unequivocally urge all nations to vote in favour of the Resolution on 28th October, 2026, at UNGA,” the letter stated.
