Guyana’s worsening electricity crisis is intensifying scrutiny over how the country’s rapidly expanding oil wealth is being converted into tangible improvements for citizens, as households and businesses continue to endure outages while billions of dollars in petroleum revenues flow into the national coffers.
The issue is at the centre of a September 27, 2026 Kaieteur News op-ed by Dr. Karen Abrams, founder and Executive Director of STEMGuyana, who argues that the country’s petroleum windfall must be translated into reliable infrastructure, stronger productive capacity and improved living conditions rather than being viewed primarily as a source of government revenue.
Abrams has spent years promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics education among Guyanese youth through STEMGuyana, making reliable electricity particularly relevant to her broader concerns about education, innovation, entrepreneurship and the development of a modern economy.
