President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday assured the nation that every available resource is being deployed in the ongoing search, rescue and recovery operation following the capsizing of the MV Barima, while announcing that a full, thorough and independent investigation will be conducted into the tragedy. In a national address, the President described the incident as “a tragedy of immense proportions” that has left the country united in grief, anxiety and sorrow. “Our nation has been plunged into a tragedy of immense proportions. The capsizing of the MV Barima has pierced the heart of our nation, leaving us united in grief, anxiety and sorrow,” he said, noting that families across Guyana continue to await news of loved ones.
Earlier on Monday, President Ali said he visited survivors, relatives of some of those still missing in Port Kaituma and Mabaruma, as well as patients receiving treatment at the Mabaruma Regional Hospital. He said the visit was an emotional experience during which he listened to survivors’ accounts, shared in the pain of affected families and assured them that the Government would provide the necessary support and assistance.
