Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne yesterday announced that the City Corporation will remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from Independence Square and rename a portion of Oxford Street after Pan-African icon Kwame Ture.
Alleyne made the announcement before a crowd of hundreds in downtown Port of Spain outside the Treasury Building during African Emancipation Day celebrations, dubbed “Freedom Morning, Come Play”.
Among those present at the event were President Christine Kangaloo and her husband, senior counsel Kerwyn Garcia; Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin; Dr Narindra Roopnarine, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and Community Development; Phillip Alexander, Minister in the Ministry of Housing; Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles; and Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Member of Parliament for St Ann’s East.
