SEVERAL quarries nationwide remained shut on November 6 as members of the TT Aggregate Producers Alliance (TTAPA) renewed calls for government intervention in what they described as a “crippling” regulatory vacuum that has left all legitimate operators technically in breach of the law.
TTAPA president Nigel Tenia led a group of quarry operators and employees outside National Quarries Ltd, Turure, Sangre Grande, where he accused the state-owned company of continuing to process sand and gravel without a valid licence under the Minerals Act of 2000.
At least one person was arrested at the site, reportedly for disorderly conduct.
