Police detained 16 Venezuelan nationals on Tuesday including two babies as they were being carried by their mothers as the group was running towards the shore of a south Trinidad beach.
Police described the detention as intelligence-driven which gave the arresting party enough time to wait for the vessel that brought them ashore.
The operation took place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday as a large team of officers took up positions near a beach camp area located along Beach Road, Palo Seco.
