GFS urges sprinklers, smoke detectors as construction boom fuels fire risks

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is urging property owners, developers and builders to make automatic fire-sprinkler systems and smoke detectors standard features in homes, apartment buildings, businesses and other facilities as Guyana’s construction boom drives a rapid increase in multi-storey buildings.

The recommendation comes through the GFS’s engagement with the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), as more residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, hospitality and storage facilities are being constructed across the country.

In a statement the Fire Service said the growing number and complexity of buildings make stronger fire-safety measures increasingly important to protecting lives and property. According to the GFS, smoke detectors and automatic sprinklers perform separate but complementary roles in the event of a fire.
