OPPOSITION Senator Vishnu Dhanpaul has declared that Trinidad and Tobago is in a recession, accusing the Government of ignoring economic contraction reflected in its own official documents while promising an expansion in economic activity and job creation.
Contributing to the 2026/2027 budget debate in the Senate, Dhanpaul challenged Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s assertion that the country was experiencing economic progression rather than recession.
He maintained that official economic data showed consecutive quarters of declining output, contradicting the Government’s optimistic economic outlook.
