(Kaieteur News) – With most ports across the Caribbean at least 50 years old, President Irfaan Ali has called on regional governments to prioritise modernising their maritime infrastructure, warning that many facilities are struggling to meet the demands of today’s shipping industry.
Ali made the call during his address at the opening ceremony of the Caribbean Shipping Association conference in Georgetown. The Guyanese head-of-state said that a challenge facing regional shipping is an uneven deployment of port infrastructure across the region.
Ali pointed to the issue of port capacity, cargo handling equipment, storage facilities, and navigational depth. He outlined, “These differences affect not only the efficiency of individual ports, but also the performance of a regional shipping network as a whole.”
