(Kaieteur News) – Former Finance Minister and economist Winston Jordan on Sunday said Guyana’s agriculture sector should have expanded significantly alongside the massive growth in the oil economy, but the sector’s performance shows that the country is still struggling to achieve meaningful economic diversification.
Speaking on the programme ‘Sources,’ Jordan said while there has been considerable talk about diversification, the latest economic figures tell a different story.
He pointed to the mid-year report, which placed growth in the non-oil economy at 10.1 per cent, noting that the figure is expected to change by year-end. However, he said the number must be examined more closely, particularly because the non-oil economy employs the majority of Guyanese.
