As the island’s annual Emancipendence celebrations culminated in grand style on Thursday evening, thousands of Jamaicans draped in black, green and gold descended on the National Stadium with one purpose: To celebrate the nation’s 64th anniversary of nationhood and pay tribute to the unbreakable spirit that has carried the country through triumph and tragedy.

Coming less than a year after the devastation of Hurricane Melissa, one of the most destructive storms in the nation’s history, this year’s Grand Gala carried a deeper significance.
