I wish to express my support for the recent protest in downtown Kingston against the Government’s decision to accept third-country nationals (TCNs) under an arrangement with the United States. The demonstration by members of Stand Up for Jamaica reflects a growing concern that the voices and priorities of ordinary Jamaicans are not receiving sufficient attention.
At a time when many citizens are struggling with the cost of living, inadequate health care, and the continuing effects of Hurricane Melissa, the Government must explain why this arrangement is in Jamaica’s best interest. It is difficult to understand why we should assume additional responsibilities when so many of our own people remain in need of assistance.
The concern is not about hostility towards foreign nationals; every human being deserves dignity and humane treatment. It is about whether Jamaica has fully considered the potential consequences of this agreement and whether the public has been given enough information to judge its merits.
